State hosting World Scout Jamboree in 2019

December 19, 2017

In two years, West Virginia will take the international stage as the site of the 24th World Scout Jamboree at Summit Bechtel Reserve near Oak Hill.

Putnam Rotary members heard the announcement at their weekly luncheon meeting today by David Duncan, a Scouting leader for Buckskin Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Buckskin Council serves the Scouting program in four states -- 22 counties in southern West Virginia, four counties in Kentucky, three in Ohio and three in Virginia.

The council is organized into five districts. Duncan, since last June, has been the scout executive for Shawnee District which takes in Mason and Putnam in West Virginia and three counties in Ohio.

The district has 10 units in Teays Valley, including a "Venturing" program sponsored by the CAMC hospital. Venturing is a vocational exploration program for both boys and girls from 13 to twenty years of age.

There are 322 registered Scouts in the Teays Valley packs, troops and venturing programs. Over 6,000 Scouts are served by the local Buckskin council.

The Scouting program has changed since Duncan attained the prestigious Eagle rank and was initiated as a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow. Four "High Adventure" locations are operated by the national program, Duncan said.

The Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico offers wilderness backpacking and horseback riding. The Northern Tier in Minnesota and Canada offers canoeing and cold-weather camping. The Florida Sea Base on the Lower Matecumbe Key offers sailing and fishing adventures.

And the Summit Bechtel Reserve in the heart of southern West Virginia, hosting a World Jamboree in two years, is the permanent home for the National Scout Jamborees.

The Summit hosted the 19th National Jamboree last summer with white water rafting, camping, rock climbing, zip lines and other Scouting activities.

The 14,000 acre Summit Reserve lies in the heart of Buckskin Council in Fayette and Raleigh counties, adjacent to the New River Gorge National River.
