Rotary again offering Putnam scholarships

January 3, 2017

Bonnie M. Prisk, Director of the Teays Valley Regional Center for Marshall University, led Putnam Rotarians today in an extended review of scholarship support for local students.

Since the inception of the program ten years ago, Prisk has served as a chair and member of the scholarship committee. She has also chaired the Education Committee of the Putnam Chamber of Commerce.

Before 2007, Rotary had recognized "most valuable all-around" seniors in each high school. But Rotarians at that time decided to increase the amount of the grants and to award them to students in especially challenging circumstances or who were unable to qualify for traditional scholarship awards.

That change multiplied the need for intensive review and for Rotary contacts with school officials. The award winners earlier had been selected by their respective schools.

The new program required students to be residents of Putnam County, and attending a college or university in West Virginia. Recipients could not be a Rotarian or a member of a Rotary family.

Over the years some 22 scholarships have been awarded to 15 students. Lauren Lilly is a four-time recipient. Kayla Hinkley and Jordan Losh have each won three scholarship awards.

Hinkley studies business administration at West Virginia Wesleyan; Losh is majoring in education at Marshall; Lilly has prepared for a career in elementary education at WVU.

Scholarship winners have represented every public high school in Putnam County. Scholar Emily Rice is a graduate of Teays Valley Christian School.

Scholarships will be offered again this spring for the 2017-18 school year, but the number of awards remains to be determined.

The program is funded through the 5K Walk/Run and the annual Golf Tournament.
