Bob Alexander
Rotary president reviews year of service, club teamwork

June 28, 2016

As Bob Alexander presided over his last meeting as President of the Putnam Rotary club -- at least for a year or so -- he expressed appreciation for the teamwork which had made his turn at the helm a time of action and new direction.

"We've had a dramatic increase in membership," he said, "at a time when most civic groups are struggling to hold steady.

"We have had more activities, this year, and more participation in community events across the county."

The "Cans for Candy" appeal for food pantries was a Rotary presence at Poca Heritage Day, at the Putnam Homecoming in Winfield, and the Hurricane Christmas Parade.

Despite several delays delays and scheduling conflicts for both the 5K Run and the annual Golf Tournament, Alexander noted that the funds raised enabled the club to provide four college scholarships for Putnam students.

"It could never have happened without your help," he said, and he gave certificates of appreciation to those who had coordinated and organized the club's activities during the year.

  • Ron Foster, for assistance in obtaining program speakers throughout the year;

  • Kelly Davis, for serving as coordinator for the scholarship Chet Marshall 5K Race;

  • Krystal Mayville, for coordination of the annual scholarship Golf Tournament;

  • Jon Miller, for service as club treasurer;

  • Cyndee Adkins, an award as club web designer;

  • Sam Sentelle, for assistance as "publicity specialist"; and

  • George Six, as club mentor.

    Dave Allen, Club President for 2016-17, "who was present and helping with every event during the past year," was named by Alexander as Putnam's Rotarian of the Year.

    Allen, in his turn, told Alexander, "We have some things for you too," as he presented a commemorative wall plague to the retiring president.

    And to round things off, George Six presented Alexander with a certificate as a "Paul Harris Fellow," an honor for donations to the Rotary International Foundation.

    President Bob now heads the alphabetical list of 44 people with PHF honors -- many for multiple times -- since the club was chartered in 1995, a total of more than $74,000 to promote health and literacy around the world.

    As he headed for the door, Alexander in his final executive action, awarded a President-Elect pin to Rotarian Pamela L. Myers. She will serve as club President in 2017-18.
