Chet Marshall

Annual memorial award
named to honor Putnam Rotarian

May 21, 2013

Ernie Hays, District Governor for southern West Virginia (RI District 7550), has instituted an annual award to recognize outstanding district governors named in honor of Chet Marshall who passed away in February.

The first Chet Marshall Award for Outstanding Service as an Assistant District Governor goes to "The Family of Chet Marshall."

The award is inscribed with "Papa Chet's" mantra, a philosophy by which he lived and served: "Success is adding value to yourself. Significance is adding value to others.":

In announcing the award at the recent district recognition banquet, Governor Hays said that he, "had never known a more ethical or positive person than Chet Marshall."

The first district awards were formalized five years ago by then-District Governor Tom Greenstreet who recognized Bob Carpenter for his outstanding service as a Past District Governor.

This year, the award went to Putnam's own "dynamic duo", Robert and Mary E. Keely. Mary served as district chief in 2010-11 with spouse Robert serving humbly and helpfully as "first laddie."

Bob Keely served as Putnam President in 2011-12, and spouse Mary Keely was President of the local club in 2006-07.

District Governor Hays recognized Putnam's "dynamic duo" for their leadership in multiple training sessions and for district conference planning.

Another Putnam Rotarian, George D. Six, received the "Spirit of the District" award from Hays for outstanding support of the district.

Six maintains the District 7550 district and club database (DaCdb), a comprehensive membership and information site accessible to district Rotarians.

Aside from serving as Rotary President in Pt. Pleasant (1983-84) and St. Albans (2010-11), Six has been inducted into Putnam Rotary twice.
