April 9, 2013

Steve Patrick held the $1,000 winning ticket in the third and final drawing of the Rotary Annual Charity Raffle today. .

But while Patrick had purchased the winning ticket, he designated another winner on the entry. The grand prize will go to "Chet Marshall's favorite Charity."

Marshall died six weeks ago after an four-year battle with multiple myeloma.

In the face of declining health, "Papa Chet," as Marshall was affectionately known, continued with his work of writing, consulting, motivational witnessing and community service.

He served as President of Putnam Rotary (2009-10), contributed generously to the Rotary Foundation, and initiated multiple group projects of community service.

The Annual 5K Run/Walk was initiated last year by Marshall. Rotarians this year renamed the event as a memorial in his honor.

Marshall also inaugurated the Charity Raffle some five years ago. Always one to lead from the front, he kicked off the latest raffle in a recorded video, and announced the sale of 200 tickets by phone from his hospital bed in Houston, Texas. Other Rotarians delivered the tickets.

"Fact is," said Patrick, the holder of the $1,000 ticket, "we may have a problem figuring out just which charity was Chet's favorite. He had so many of them."
