A student Interact Club has been approved for a formal Rotary charter at Poca High School, Putnam Rotary President Bob Keely announced today.
Interact is Rotary Internationalís service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.
Putnam Rotary has supported an Interact Club at Hurricane High School, and also a related Twenty-Four/Seven drug abuse prevention group at Hurricane. The 24/7 movement has also taken root at Hurricane Middle School.
Heather Reed, who sponsored the 24/7 organization at HHS now serves on the faculty at Poca, and there has been some talk of coordination with the new Interact Club.
Molly Ballard receives an Interact T-shirt from Chet Marshall.
Molly's brother Mason, now a freshman at North Carolina's Davidson College, was a HOBY ambassador two years earlier.
Molly's father, Gary Ballard, who attended the Rotary luncheon today, has been nominated by Toyota of West Virginia to represent the Buffalo plant in an application for corporate membership in Putnam Rotary.
Rotarian Chet Marshall. met Molly through her participation in the local huddle of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Marshall and Rotarian Tom Midkiff will meet with the Poca Interact group in the near future to present the members with a club banner, pins with the Interact insignia, and Polo club polo shirts.
Marshall presented Ballard with one of the shirts at today's meeting.
Midkiff is working to establish an Interact Club at Winfield High School which would also be supported through Putnam Rotary..
