Many hands helping Uganda orphans

March 5, 2009

Several local groups have pooled their resources to bring potable water to an orphanage/school in Uganda.

Among the participants in the international project are Putnam Rotary, the Vandalia Rotary Club of Charleston and Poca Baptist Church.

Putnam Rotary President Tom Midkiff has presented Ron Thaxton, representing "Smile Uganda," with a gift of $3,500 to purchase water holding tanks for the Divine Secondary School in Entebbe.

Needs at the east African school, home to some 70 to 80 boys and girls, were first recognized when Putnam's Chet Marshall visited in early 2005. In addition to lack of potable water and electricity, the school needed a clinic, facilities for infant care, and equipment for vocational training.

In April 2007 a grant of $5,000 from Poca Baptist Church and Putnam Rotary provided the means for food and living quarters for students.
