Putnam Rotarians today completed the distribution of nearly 700 copies of Webster's New Basic Thesaurus to local sixth grade students today at Poca Middle School and George Washington Middle School in Eleanor.
The books come from the national Dictionary Project as a gift through Rotary District 7550 which includes 32 local clubs in southern West Virginia.
This is the second year the Putnam club has participated in the project: Last year dictionaries were donated for adult literacy education, and a month ago thesaurus copies were handed out at Hurricane Middle and Winfield Middle Schools.
Assisting with the project were members of the Interact Club at Hurricane High School.
The distributions today were made by Laberta S. Salamacha, a clinical psychologist and "personal success coach" with offices in Teays Valley and Charleston, and Randy Lucas, president of Padgett Business Services.
Both Salamacha and Lucas are Paul Harris Fellows, the highest recognition and honor given by Rotary International. Lucas, a past Assistant District Governor, has received the PHF honor three times, the first multiple recipient in the local club.
